A family winery in Ofra, founded in 2001 and named for the founder's daughter, with vineyards on the slopes around the community and visits by appointment

Tanya Winery is a family winery founded in 2001 by Yoram Cohen and named after his daughter, a name taken from the Talmud, where it opens quoted teachings such as "Tanya, said Rabbi Yishmael"; its wine series, Elia, Hillel, Enosh and Ivri, carry the names of his children. Its site says it started with about 800 bottles in 2002, for family and friends, reached about 30,000 bottles a year by 2007, and won nine medals between 2007 and 2009. Its 32 dunams of vineyards grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Chardonnay on the rocky limestone slopes of the central ridge, in and beside Ofra at about 900 metres above sea level, and the grapes are picked by hand before dawn, then aged 14 to 24 months in French oak barrels. The visitors' centre hosts by appointment only, in three ways: a vineyard tour with a wine tasting, a tasting of Israeli cheeses with Tanya wines, and a meat and wine meal.
