Afek Winery was founded in 2008 by Aharon and Hali Jalah under the name AG Winery, and it makes small runs of boutique wine, about 7,000 bottles a year. Aharon, who helped his father and grandfather make wine at home as a boy, studied winemaking at the Soreq winery and at Ariel college and makes the wine himself from start to finish; Hali runs the visits, and the children help from taking in the grapes to arranging the stock. The grapes come from vineyards in the Upper Galilee, Alon HaGalil, Gush Etzion and Mitzpe Ramon, and the wines run from a Bordeaux-style blend and a Shiraz-based Rhône-style blend to a barrel-aged Chardonnay and small varietal series; its site says they have won many gold and double gold medals. Visits are by appointment only, and on Thursdays it holds tasting evenings and meals for small groups, with cheeses and fresh bread beside the wine.
