Kibbutz Tuval, Beit HaKerem Valley, Tuval

A family boutique winery on a hilltop at Kibbutz Tuval, near Karmiel, where winemaker Johnny Stern holds tastings around a heavy wooden table he built himself

Stern Winery is a family boutique winery founded in 2004 by Johnny Stern, with the help and support of Ronnie Landau. It began at home, moved to Kibbutz Gadot and later to Kibbutz Tuval, in the Tefen bloc near Karmiel, on one of the hilltops that look out to the Mediterranean. It now makes about 30,000 bottles a year from grapes grown at Tuval, Ramot Naftali and Kidmat Zvi, in the Galilee and the Golan, and since 2016 it has also made kosher wines. Johnny, who came from Brazil as a teenager in 1971 and played basketball for Israel's youth team, is the owner, the winemaker, the bookkeeper and the salesman, and a circle of relatives and friends, the winery's friends' club, joins in from the harvest onwards. The visitor centre, in an industrial building up the dirt track at the entrance to the kibbutz, offers an explanation of how the wine is made, a tour of the barrel room and tastings around a heavy wooden table, among wooden furniture that Johnny also made; visits are arranged by phone or through a form on its site.
