Kibbutz Yahel, off Road 90, Yahel

The 43 guest rooms of Kibbutz Yahel, the northernmost kibbutz of the southern Arava, set in a green garden 65 km north of Eilat, beside some of the region's cycling trails

Maayan BaMidbar is the guest-room compound of Kibbutz Yahel, founded in November 1976 as the first settlement of Reform Judaism and today home to more than 200 people. Its 43 air-conditioned rooms stand among lawns, flowering garden, shaded seats and barbecue corners, with parking close to the rooms. The kibbutz's semi-Olympic pool, with a toddlers' area and recently renovated, is free for guests in the long swimming season, the football, basketball and tennis courts are a few steps from the rooms, and guests may walk through the kibbutz to the big playground and the cowshed and calves. The dining room, run by chef Gil Peri, seats about 200 and serves breakfast, weekday lunches and a Friday-night dinner. The site courts cyclists: the Yahel to Ketura trail starts at the kibbutz gate, there is a corner for washing and fixing bikes, and it hosts riders of the Samarathon mountain-bike race every year.
