Farm 36, Moshav Zrahia, Zrahia

A kosher family winery in Moshav Zrahia, near Kiryat Malachi, where the vineyard, the winery and a visitor centre for tastings and tours stand side by side

Maresha is the winery of the Habibian family, whose grandparents came from Iran in 1952 and settled in Moshav Zrahia in 1954 as farmers. Its site says four generations now share the work: Oren, a civil engineer, and his father Shaul planted the first vines in 2006, the winery and visitor centre opened in 2008, the first vintage came in 2009 and the first bottles went on sale in 2011. Every grape comes from the family's own vineyard, among them Chenin Blanc, Grenache and Pinotage, in three series: Nahal Guvrin, the flagship red, aged 16 to 18 months in oak; Tel Maresha; and Romilta, named after a 1,500-year-old winepress and pottery works close to the winery's gates. The visitor centre sits beside the vines, with wooden tables facing the fields; tours walk the vine rows, pass the fermentation tanks and barrels and end in a guided tasting, and the compound also hosts small weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs and company evenings. It is closed on Saturday.
