Grenade mishap in southern Lebanon wounds IDF soldier and officer
A soldier was severely hurt and an officer moderately hurt in what the IDF calls an operational accident; Ynet links it to a grenade thrown by officer cadets.

An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier was severely injured and an IDF officer was moderately injured on Friday in what the military described as an operational accident in southern Lebanon. According to the IDF spokesperson, both were taken to hospital for treatment and their families have been informed.
The military statement did not say what caused the injuries. Ynet, the news site of the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, gave more detail. Ynet reported that a unit of cadets from Bahad 1 was operating in the village of Majdal Zun when one of them threw a grenade improperly during operational activity. The cadet who threw it was hurt, Ynet said, along with a second fighter. N12, an Israeli television news outlet, reported through its military correspondent Nir Dvori that two fighters had been wounded, one severely and one moderately, in an operational accident in southern Lebanon.
What the IDF is examining
Ynet reported that the military is looking into how the grenade was thrown, and whether it struck an object that then caused it to detonate close to the troops. Neither the IDF statement nor the N12 report mentions a grenade, and the military has not published findings. The account of how the injuries happened therefore rests on Ynet's reporting at this stage.
What Bahad 1 is
Bahad is a Hebrew military acronym for a training base, and Bahad 1 is the IDF's officers' school, where soldiers train to become commissioned officers. People attending the course are known as cadets. Ynet's description of the unit as cadets from Bahad 1 means the troops involved were officer trainees taking part in operational activity in Lebanon, rather than a regular line unit.
That detail may help explain a difference in wording between the reports. The IDF spokesperson refers to a soldier and an officer. Ynet and N12 both describe the two as fighters, the common Hebrew term for combat soldiers, and Ynet describes them as cadets. The reports do not explain how the ranks of the two wounded men line up with these descriptions.
Where Majdal Zun is
Majdal Zun, named by Ynet as the place of the incident, is a village in southern Lebanon. The IDF statement and the N12 report locate the incident only in southern Lebanon in general terms and do not name a village.
What an operational accident means
In IDF terminology, an operational accident is an incident in which soldiers are hurt or killed during military activity by something other than enemy action: a weapon malfunction, mishandled equipment, friendly fire or a vehicle crash, for example. The military uses the term in its casualty announcements to separate such cases from injuries inflicted by an adversary. The IDF typically opens an inquiry after these incidents, and Ynet's report that the handling of the grenade is under examination is consistent with that practice.
A second incident
Ynet also reported a separate incident in southern Lebanon in which 8 soldiers were lightly injured in what it called an operational road accident. Ynet gave no further details of that crash, and it is not mentioned in the IDF statement or the N12 report reviewed here.
Where the reports differ
- Cause: Ynet attributes the injuries to an improperly thrown grenade. The IDF and N12 say only that an operational accident occurred.
- Who was hurt: the IDF names one soldier and one officer. Ynet and N12 refer to two fighters, and Ynet says they were cadets from the officers' school.
- Location: only Ynet names Majdal Zun.
- Timing: the IDF says the incident took place on Friday. The other reports do not give a day.
What the reports do not say
None of the reports names the wounded or identifies their units beyond Ynet's reference to Bahad 1. None states which hospital they were taken to or gives an update on their condition beyond the initial severe and moderate classifications. The reports do not say which of the two was the cadet who threw the grenade, what kind of grenade was involved, or what the troops were doing in Majdal Zun at the time. They do not say whether an object was in fact struck, as Ynet reports the military is checking, or when the findings of any inquiry will be made public. Nor do they explain the circumstances of the separate road accident that Ynet reported.
