IDF says strike in Khan Yunis killed Hamas commander Ibrahim Alam
The Israeli military says a Hamas commander it ties to the October 7 attack and to the seizure of Sergeant Shaked Dahan's body was killed in southern Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it has killed Ibrahim Alam, whom it describes as a commander in the military wing of Hamas. In a post on its official X account, the IDF said Alam crossed into Israel during the October 7 attack, took part in killing many Israeli civilians, and was involved in taking the body of Sergeant Shaked Dahan into Hamas captivity. The same post said a second man, Mu'tasem Muhammad Suleiman Salah, identified by the military as a Hamas operative, was also killed.
Further detail on the location and timing came from a Hebrew-language summary of the IDF spokesperson's statement. According to the Telegram channel Abu Ali Express, which relayed the spokesperson's statement, the strike was carried out in the Khan Yunis area of the Gaza Strip on Monday of this week, and the announcement came several days after the strike itself. The IDF post said both men had recently been advancing attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers and working to rebuild Hamas's capabilities.

Who the IDF says Ibrahim Alam was
The military's account describes Alam as a commander rather than a rank-and-file fighter, though neither report specifies his unit, his rank or the size of the force he led. The central allegation is his participation in the October 7 attack, when Hamas gunmen crossed from Gaza into southern Israel. Israelis commonly refer to that day as a massacre, and the IDF uses that term in its English-language post.
The IDF also links Alam directly to the abduction of the body of Sergeant Shaked Dahan. The reports do not say when or where Sergeant Dahan was killed, the unit he served in, or whether his remains have since been returned to Israel. In Hebrew usage, the abbreviation z"l, which appears after his name in the Hebrew report, stands for a phrase meaning "of blessed memory" and is customarily added to the names of the dead.
The second man named
Mu'tasem Muhammad Suleiman Salah is named only in the IDF's X post, which calls him a member of Hamas's military wing. The post gives no rank, role or link to specific past attacks for him, and the Hebrew summary carried by Abu Ali Express does not mention him in the portion available. It is not stated whether he was killed in the same strike as Alam.
Context: Hamas's military wing and Khan Yunis
Hamas, the Islamist movement that has controlled the Gaza Strip, maintains an armed wing that is organised separately from its political leadership. The IDF frequently distinguishes between the two when it announces strikes, identifying targets as members of the "military wing." Israel, along with a number of other governments, designates Hamas as a terrorist organisation, and IDF statements routinely describe its members as terrorists.
Khan Yunis is one of the largest cities in the southern part of the Gaza Strip and has been the scene of repeated Israeli military operations since the October 7 attack. Announcements of this kind, naming an individual and tying him to specific acts on that day, have become a regular feature of IDF communications, often released some days after a strike once the military says it has confirmed the result.
The IDF's justification
In its post, the military said the two men had recently been pushing forward attacks against civilians and troops and acting to restore Hamas's capabilities. The English text then refers to a "systematic violation" before it is cut off in the material available to us, so the full sentence, including what agreement or arrangement the IDF says was being violated, cannot be quoted here. The Hebrew summary likewise ends mid-sentence.
What the reports do not say
- No independent confirmation of the deaths is cited. Both accounts rest on the IDF's own statement.
- There is no response from Hamas in either report, and no account from Palestinian sources of the strike in Khan Yunis.
- The reports do not say whether anyone else was killed or injured in the strike.
- No evidence is presented publicly for the allegations about Alam's role on October 7 or in the abduction of Sergeant Dahan's body.
- The truncated end of the IDF post leaves unclear what the military says the men were violating.
- Neither report gives a precise date for the strike beyond the Monday reference in the Hebrew summary.
