An Israeli airstrike in the Gaza City area on Sunday killed Musa Abd Muhammad Hamouda, a Hamas operative the military links to a bombing that killed four Israeli tank crew members last year. The killing was disclosed in a joint announcement by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA), which described Hamouda as a member of the Nukhba unit within Hamas's military wing.

According to the IDF, Hamouda helped plan the bombing of a tank belonging to the 52nd Battalion of the 401st Armored Brigade on September 8, 2025. The Times of Israel, citing the military, identified the four crew members who died: Lt. Matan Abramovitz, Sgt. Gadi Cotal, Sgt. Amit Arye Regev and Staff Sgt. Uri Lamed.

Who the military says Hamouda was

The Nukhba is the elite force of Hamas's armed wing. The IDF accuses Hamouda of more than the tank attack. In a post on X, the army said he had advanced attacks against Israeli civilians and troops and worked to rebuild Hamas's military capabilities, which it called a systematic breach of the ceasefire. Israel's N12 news channel, relaying the army's account, said the military described him as having operated systematically against Israeli forces in the Strip throughout the war.

None of these accusations have been independently confirmed. Hamas's response, if any, does not appear in the material.

The two agencies behind the announcement

The IDF is Israel's military. The ISA, widely known by its Hebrew acronym Shin Bet (Shabak), is the domestic security service. It supplies intelligence for many strikes in Gaza, which is why the two bodies often issue joint statements when a named individual is killed. Gaza City is the largest urban area in the Gaza Strip.

The attack on the 52nd Battalion tank

The 52nd Battalion belongs to the 401st Armored Brigade, one of the IDF's tank formations. Hebrew-language reports carrying the full joint statement add that the four soldiers fell while under the command of the 162nd Division, and that the statement presents Hamouda's death as a significant closing of the circle for that division. The Hebrew phrase used, roughly "closing the circle", is a common Israeli expression for settling an account with those held responsible for soldiers' deaths. The excerpt of that statement also refers to a named military operation, but the text available to us is cut off before the name is complete, so we do not give it here.

Where the accounts differ

The descriptions of Hamouda's role are not identical. The joint IDF and ISA statement, and the Times of Israel report based on it, say he took part in planning the attack. The IDF's English post on X says more briefly that he took part in the attack itself. A Ynet news alert headline says he planned it.

The spelling of one soldier's name also varies between English versions: the Times of Israel writes Uri Lamed, while the IDF's post on X gives Uri Lemad. The middle name of Sgt. Regev appears as both Arye and Aryeh. These are transliterations of the same Hebrew name. The Hebrew statement describes the attack as one in which an explosive charge was thrown, a detail the English summaries do not carry.

What the reports do not say

The reports do not say how Hamouda was located or how the strike was carried out beyond calling it an airstrike. They do not say whether anyone else was killed or injured in the strike. They give no detail on which attacks against civilians or troops he allegedly advanced since the ceasefire began, or what specific capabilities he was accused of rebuilding. They do not explain why the killing, carried out on Sunday, was announced later in the week. No response from Hamas or from Gaza authorities is included in any of the material.
