Israeli forces keep Hebron under closure after attack that killed two soldiers
The army says it launched a targeted operation in the Hebron area after Friday's deadly attack, as residents were told to hand over weapons.

Israeli security forces have launched an operation in and around the West Bank city of Hebron after an attack on Friday in which two Israeli soldiers were killed and others were wounded. In a statement posted on X, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the operation is focused on the part of Hebron from which the attackers came, and that its goal is to take apart what it called terrorist infrastructure and to head off further attacks.
A day later, the operation was still under way. The Hebrew-language news channel News.co.il reported that the security establishment had circulated a message to Hebron residents telling them to surrender any weapons they hold, warning that otherwise they would be putting their lives at risk. The same report said the Judea Brigade, commanded by Colonel Dotan Malul, is keeping the city under closure and carrying out offensive activity across Hebron. News.co.il published the item under the heading "Sha'agat Yehuda", Hebrew for "Roar of Judah".

On the ground
Israel has imposed a full closure on the occupied West Bank after two Israeli soldiers were killed in a shooting attack at a military checkpoint in Hebron. Palestinian political activist Mustafa Barghouti says incitement from far-right Israeli ministers is worsening things.

What the army says it is doing
The IDF statement describes the operation as targeted. According to the military, it was launched in direct response to Friday's attack, and the area it covers is the one the attackers set out from. The army framed the aims in two parts: dismantling the infrastructure behind the attack, and preventing future ones.
The statement also addresses the civilian population. The IDF said that, in order to lower the danger to people living in the area, residents were allowed to leave for a limited period, passing through screening points set up for that purpose. The army stated plainly: "No civilians were forced to evacuate." The statement went on to mention a separate activity involving an illegal structure, but the text available to us is cut off at that point and gives no further detail.
The weapons warning
The message to residents, as reported by News.co.il, is a demand that people hand in all the weapons in their possession. The report presents it as a message from the security establishment, the general Israeli term for the defence ministry, the army and the intelligence services together, rather than naming a single body as its author. It does not say how the message was distributed, whether through leaflets, phone messages or another method, and it does not report how many weapons, if any, have been surrendered.

Hebron and the Judea Brigade
Hebron is a large Palestinian city in the southern West Bank, the territory that Israel refers to in official usage as Judea and Samaria. It is also home to a small Jewish community and to the Cave of the Patriarchs, a site holy to both Jews and Muslims, which makes it one of the most sensitive locations in the West Bank for Israeli security forces.
The Judea Brigade is the IDF regional brigade responsible for the Hebron area and the surrounding southern West Bank. A regional brigade of this kind holds ongoing security responsibility for a defined sector, which is why its commander is named in connection with the closure. A closure, or seger in Hebrew, generally means that movement into and out of an area is restricted by the military.

Where the two accounts differ in emphasis
The two reports describe the same operation but stress different things. The IDF calls it a targeted operation in a specific area of Hebron and highlights that residents could leave voluntarily and that nobody was made to evacuate. News.co.il describes a closure on Hebron and offensive activity throughout the whole city. The reports do not directly contradict each other, but they leave unclear how much of Hebron is affected and how freely residents can move in and out. We are reporting both descriptions rather than choosing between them.
What the reports do not say
Neither report gives the names of the soldiers who were killed, the number of soldiers wounded, or the nature of their injuries. Neither describes how Friday's attack was carried out or exactly where it took place, beyond the IDF's statement that the attackers came from the Hebron area. The reports do not say whether any suspects have been arrested, killed or identified, or which group, if any, the attackers belonged to.
There is no information on how many residents have left through the screening points, how long the closure is expected to last, or whether there have been clashes or casualties during the operation itself. The IDF's reference to a separate activity involving an illegal structure is incomplete in the material available, so we cannot say what that activity involved. We will update this account if further verified details emerge.
