Israeli military says two strikes in southern Gaza killed five militants

The IDF named three Islamic Jihad members killed in Khan Younis and two Hamas Nukhba members killed in a separate strike, saying all were planning attacks on troops.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it killed five members of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in two separate strikes in the southern Gaza Strip over recent days. In a statement on its official channel, the military said the first strike, carried out on Sunday in the Khan Younis area, hit three members of Islamic Jihad's military wing who, it said, had gathered to plan attacks against Israeli soldiers.

The military identified the three as Muhammad Abu Hajjaj, described as an engineering operative; Yousef Abu Razak, described as a deputy squad commander; and Abdelhamid Jadallah, described as a rocket operative. In a post on X, the IDF said a second, separate strike killed Salah al-Din Iyad Abd al-Hamid and Izz al-Din Iyad Diab Barhoum, whom it described as Nukhba members belonging to the Rafah Brigade of Hamas's military wing.

What each report adds

All five accounts trace back to the Israeli military. Emanuel Fabian, military correspondent for the Times of Israel, relayed the announcement, reporting that the Khan Younis strike was one of two and that the dead had been meeting to prepare attacks on troops. Joe Truzman, a researcher at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), a Washington-based think tank, summarised the IDF claims and placed the second strike on Monday, somewhere in southern Gaza. Fabian's report described the second strike as taking place the day before publication, which is consistent with Monday. The Hebrew-language outlet News.co.il carried a brief item repeating the military's figure of five dead from both organisations.

None of the reports cites a Palestinian source, a Gaza health official, or an independent witness. The identities, ranks and alleged activities of the five men are all as stated by the IDF.

Discrepancies in names and details

The spelling of the names varies between reports, as often happens with transliteration from Arabic. The IDF's Telegram post lists the third Islamic Jihad member as "Abdelhamid Jada", while its X post and the Times of Israel correspondent give "Jadallah". Truzman renders the names as Muhammad Hajjaj, Yusuf Abu Rizq and Abdul Hamid Jadallah, and gives the first Hamas member's name as Salah al-Din Iyad Abdul Hamid.

The job descriptions also differ slightly. Jadallah is called a rocket operative in one version, a rocket array operative in another and a rocket-unit operative in a third. Abu Razak is a deputy squad commander in the IDF's wording and a deputy cell commander in Truzman's. These appear to be translation choices rather than conflicting claims, but the reports do not settle which form is correct.

The places and groups involved

Khan Younis is one of the largest cities in the southern Gaza Strip, lying between Deir al-Balah to the north and Rafah to the south. Rafah sits on Gaza's southern edge along the border with Egypt, and Hamas organises its armed wing into regional brigades named after areas of the territory, of which the Rafah Brigade is one.

Hamas is the Islamist movement that has governed Gaza and maintains an armed wing. Palestinian Islamic Jihad is a smaller, separate armed faction that operates alongside it in the territory. Israel, the United States and a number of other countries designate both as terrorist organisations.

Nukhba, an Arabic word meaning "elite", is the name given to Hamas's specialist assault units. Israel associates Nukhba fighters with the cross-border attack on southern Israel that began the current war, and the IDF frequently highlights Nukhba membership when it announces that a Hamas operative has been killed.

How this fits the pattern of announcements

The IDF regularly publishes lists of people it says it has killed in Gaza, typically naming them, giving their role in an armed group and stating that they were involved in planning or carrying out attacks. These announcements are usually issued through the military's Telegram and X accounts and then picked up by Israeli correspondents and analysts, which is what happened here: every report in this case was published within roughly half an hour of the military's own post.

What the reports do not say

The reports do not say exactly where in southern Gaza the second strike took place, beyond its link to the Rafah Brigade. They do not say what type of weapon or aircraft was used in either strike, although Truzman describes both as airstrikes. They give no information about anyone else who may have been killed or wounded, and no response from Hamas, Islamic Jihad or Palestinian authorities in Gaza is included. The IDF's statement that the men were planning attacks against troops is not accompanied by any detail about what those attacks were or when they were expected.

How we checked this

The strikes, the death toll and the identities of the five men are claims of the Israel Defense Forces, relayed by the Times of Israel's military correspondent, an FDD researcher and News.co.il.
