The IDF and Shin Bet say they killed a senior figure in Hamas's covert General Security apparatus, which guards and moves the group's leadership.

Israel's military and its domestic security service say they have killed Akram Bassam Shaaban Yassin, whom they describe as a senior official in the General Security Mechanism of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. In a joint announcement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) said the strike was carried out on Tuesday in the Gaza City area and was guided by intelligence.
The announcement did not say how the strike was delivered or give its precise location. The Times of Israel, reporting the military's statement, described it as an Israeli airstrike and said the IDF presented the killing as part of a continuing campaign against senior figures in the same apparatus.

Who the IDF and Shin Bet are
The IDF is Israel's military. The ISA, widely known in Israel by its Hebrew acronym Shin Bet, is the country's internal security and counterintelligence service, and it frequently works alongside the army on targeted strikes by supplying intelligence. Hebrew-language outlets reporting the event, including News.co.il and N12, used the verb commonly rendered in English military statements as "eliminated", meaning a targeted killing.
What the General Security Mechanism does
According to the IDF, the General Security Mechanism is a central and secretive Hamas body. Israeli reporting in Hebrew refers to it by the abbreviation Batkal. The military describes several functions for it:
- Guarding senior Hamas officials and handling communications between them
- Arranging meetings among the leadership
- Moving senior figures between emergency locations
- Producing intelligence assessments, including material gathered on Israeli security forces
The IDF says those assessments help Hamas leaders make decisions and carry out attacks against Israel. Commentator Amit Segal, writing in Hebrew, summarised the unit as a covert body that both protects the group's leaders and collects intelligence against the Israeli military.
The allegations against Yassin
In a post on X, the IDF said that Yassin had recently been advancing attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers and had tried to rebuild Hamas's capabilities, which the military called a "systematic violation of the ceasefire." N12 reported the same claims, attributing them to the army. None of the reports describe specific attacks he is alleged to have planned, and these accusations remain the IDF's own account.
The mention of a ceasefire indicates that the strike took place while a truce arrangement in Gaza was in effect, at least as Israel describes it. The reports do not set out the terms of that ceasefire or explain which provisions the IDF believes were breached.
Part of a wider campaign
According to The Times of Israel, the military presented the killing as the latest step in a continuing push against the apparatus's senior ranks, intended to erode what the unit can do inside Gaza. The same report added that several of the unit's top commanders were killed in June in strikes carried out by Israel's air force and navy. Targeting the officials who protect and move a group's leadership is aimed, in Israel's stated reasoning, at the infrastructure that keeps senior figures hidden and connected, rather than only at the leaders themselves.
Where Gaza City is
Gaza City is the largest urban area in the Gaza Strip, the coastal territory bordering Israel and Egypt that Hamas has governed. The reports give only the general Gaza City area as the location of the strike and do not name a neighbourhood or building.
What the reports do not say
Every account of this event traces back to the joint IDF and Shin Bet announcement; the outlets listed relayed or summarised the military's statement rather than reporting independently from the scene. Several things are therefore unknown from this material:
- Whether anyone else was killed or injured in the strike
- The exact time and location of the attack, or the weapon used
- Any response from Hamas, including confirmation or denial of Yassin's death or his role
- Details of the attacks Yassin is accused of advancing
- How the strike relates to the ceasefire terms, beyond the IDF's assertion of violations
