A man of about 30 was seriously injured while riding an electric scooter in the southern Israeli town of Netivot, according to Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel's national emergency medical service. MDA's spokesperson's office said its Negev region dispatch centre received the call at 11:42. The caller reported a rider hurt on Jerusalem Boulevard (Sderot Yerushalayim), one of the town's streets.

MDA said its medics and paramedics treated the man at the scene. He had a head injury, and they took him to Soroka hospital in serious condition. The Israeli news site Ynet also carried the incident in its breaking-news alert service, reporting that an electric scooter rider had been seriously hurt while riding in Netivot. The two reports agree on the town, the type of vehicle and the severity of the injury. Only MDA gave the street, the rider's approximate age, the nature of the injury and the hospital.

Who reported the incident

Magen David Adom, often shortened to MDA, is Israel's national ambulance and emergency medical organisation. It is the Israeli member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and it uses a red Star of David as its emblem. The public reaches its dispatch centres by dialling 101, Israel's emergency number for medical calls. MDA runs regional dispatch centres around the country, and its spokesperson's office regularly posts short updates on road accidents and other emergencies. Those updates often give the time a call came in, the patient's estimated age and sex, and their condition on the way to hospital.

Ynet is the news website of the Yedioth Ahronoth group and one of Israel's most widely read Hebrew-language news outlets. Its alerts channel publishes brief headlines that link to fuller reports on the main site. The alert in this case was a single line and did not add details beyond those in the MDA statement.

Where it happened

Netivot is a town in the Negev, the arid southern region of Israel. MDA's statement placed the call within its Negev regional dispatch area. Soroka, where the rider was taken, is the main hospital serving the region.

What the Hebrew terms mean

MDA's statement used the Hebrew word galginoa, a term coined for a powered personal vehicle on wheels, and added the more everyday word korkinet chashmali, meaning electric scooter, in brackets. Ynet used korkinet chashmali. Both refer to the stand-up electric scooters common in Israeli towns and cities.

MDA's statements describe a patient's condition using a standard scale that runs from light to moderate to serious to critical. A serious classification indicates a significant injury, though it is a step below critical. A classification given at the scene can change once a patient has been assessed in hospital.

How this fits a familiar pattern

Reports of injuries involving electric scooters and electric bicycles appear frequently in MDA's daily updates. Riders, pedestrians and other road users are all involved in incidents of this kind, and head injuries are among the conditions MDA describes most often in them. Neither report placed this incident in a wider set of figures, and this article does not attempt to.

What the reports do not say

Neither report says how the rider was hurt. They do not say whether he fell, struck an object, or collided with a vehicle or another person. It is not stated whether anyone else was involved or injured. The reports do not say whether the rider was wearing a helmet, whether police are examining the circumstances, or what the rider's condition was after he reached hospital. The rider has not been named. Ynet's alert pointed readers to a fuller report on its website, but that report was not part of the material available for this article. Any further details it may contain are not reflected here.

How we checked this

Magen David Adom and Ynet both reported that an electric scooter rider was seriously injured in Netivot. The street, the rider's age, the head injury and the hospital come only from MDA's statement, and neither report explains how the injury happened.
