Pentagon told to ready Iran strike options before US midterm elections
US outlets report the White House asked for plans to resume military action against Iran within weeks, though Trump has not decided and no date was set.
The Pentagon has been asked to prepare options for renewed military action against Iran that could be carried out before next month's US midterm elections, according to reporting by the American magazine The Atlantic, which cited two administration sources. Haaretz, summarising that report, said the sources linked the request to President Donald Trump's wish to show progress in the conflict before voters cast their ballots.
A separate report by the US news site Axios, relayed by The Times of Israel, said US officials described an instruction to the military to be ready to resume operations against Iran. According to that account, Trump has not reached a final decision and the instruction carried no date. The Israeli news channel News.co.il reported the same two points: no specific date, and no final decision by the president.
What the reports say is driving the request
The accounts differ in emphasis on motive. Israel Hayom, citing The Atlantic, said officials tied the effort to Trump's aim of bringing down gasoline prices and demonstrating gains in the war ahead of Election Day. Haaretz framed its report around rising energy costs. Israel Hayom also noted that critics have cautioned that a limited strike could produce the opposite of the intended effect, and that Washington is simultaneously holding indirect talks with Tehran through mediators.
The Midterms are the US elections held halfway through a president's four year term, in which control of Congress is contested. Several of the reports place them early next month.
What strikes might target
According to Axios, as reported by The Times of Israel, sources expect any renewed strikes to focus on nuclear facilities, infrastructure and energy sites. The same report said a resumption of fighting would likely involve Israel as well, though the excerpt available to us breaks off before giving further detail.
A White House official quoted by Axios said the United States holds a strong position, citing its control of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea passage at the mouth of the Persian Gulf through which a large share of the world's oil exports moves, and what the official called the collapse of the Iranian economy. The official said events would go either "the easy way or the hard way" and that Trump "holds all the cards".
Trump's own remarks
Israel's Ynet news site reported that at a campaign rally in Texas, Trump said he did not really want an agreement with Iran, while also claiming that Tehran was prepared to offer anything. Ynet said several American media outlets were reporting that the conflict could resume in the coming weeks, and that the president had discussed broad scale actions with his team while the military made preparations.
Which elections
The reports do not agree on the timing frame. The Atlantic, as cited by Haaretz and Israel Hayom, and Ynet all link the possible action to the US midterm elections. The Times of Israel's summary of the Axios report instead says action could come before the Israeli elections at the end of this month. We have not been able to establish from the material whether these refer to the same window or reflect different readings of the timeline.
Context for readers
The Pentagon is the headquarters of the US Department of Defense and the term is commonly used for the US military leadership. Drawing up strike options on instruction is a planning step and does not in itself mean an attack has been authorised. Every report here describes the action as a resumption, indicating earlier hostilities between the United States and Iran, but none of the material we have sets out when those took place or how they ended.
What the reports do not say
- None of the reports names the officials or sources involved, and the White House official quoted by Axios is unidentified.
- No report gives a date, a scale or a specific target list for any strike.
- The reports do not say what stage the diplomatic talks through mediators have reached, or who the mediators are.
- There is no response from Iran in the material.
- It is not clear what role, if any, Israel has been asked to play beyond the Axios assessment that it would likely take part.

How we checked this
The core claim, that US forces were told to prepare for possible renewed action against Iran, comes from The Atlantic and Axios as relayed by five Israeli outlets; we have not seen the original US reports. The link to Israeli elections appears only in The Times of Israel's summary of Axios, and Trump's rally remarks are reported only by Ynet.
