A 17-year-old boy has died after being critically hurt in a violent incident on Herzl Street in Ashkelon, a coastal city in southern Israel, and a second teenager was taken to hospital with light injuries. Magen David Adom, Israel's national emergency medical service, said its 101 dispatch centre for the Lachish region received the call at 23:28, and that its medics and paramedics treated the 17-year-old for penetrating wounds before taking him to Barzilai hospital in serious condition.

Later reports said the teenager did not survive. Ynet reported that he was unconscious when he was evacuated and that his death was declared at Barzilai. N12 relayed a police update saying the boy was suspected to have been stabbed in an incident between criminal elements, and that his death had been pronounced at the hospital.

How the reports differ on the weapon

The accounts do not agree on how the boy was hurt. The police update carried by N12 refers to a suspected stabbing. Ynet also described a stabbing, and added that an axe was found at the scene, while stressing that it was not yet known whether the axe had been used to injure the boy who was killed.

News.co.il went further, saying the teen was reportedly attacked with an axe during a brawl on Herzl Street, and its headline described him as murdered with an axe. That outlet attributed the axe detail to an unnamed report rather than to the police. Magen David Adom's statement described the injuries only as penetrating wounds and did not name a weapon.

Israel.com is not resolving this difference. On the material available, the police position is a suspected stabbing; the role of the axe found at the scene is unconfirmed.

The suspected background

According to Ynet, police believe the incident stems from a criminal dispute between offenders. The N12 police update used similar language, describing the event as taking place between criminal figures. Neither report named the people involved, and no report said whether anyone had been detained.

News.co.il framed the incident under the heading that violence is raging, reflecting wider public concern in Israel about violent crime. That framing is the outlet's own, and the reports here do not give figures or comparisons to support or measure it.

Who responded and where

Magen David Adom (often shortened to MDA, Hebrew for Red Star of David) is Israel's national ambulance and emergency medical organisation, and is recognised as the country's member of the international Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. Members of the public reach it by dialling 101, and its operations are divided into regions; the call in this case was handled by the Lachish region, which covers the Ashkelon area.

Ashkelon is a city on Israel's Mediterranean coast in the south of the country, north of the Gaza Strip. Barzilai is the city's main hospital, and it is where both MDA and the news outlets said the 17-year-old was taken. Herzl Street, where the incident happened, is named after Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern political Zionism; streets bearing his name are found in many Israeli cities.

How the story developed

The first reports, from N12 and from MDA's own spokesperson, described the 17-year-old as seriously injured with penetrating wounds and said a second teen had been evacuated in light condition. N12 attached footage credited to MDA's operational documentation. Subsequent reports from Ynet and News.co.il, followed by the police update relayed by N12, said the boy had died at Barzilai. The second teenager's condition was described as light in every report that mentioned him.

What the reports do not say

  • None of the reports name the 17-year-old who died or the second teenager, or say whether the two knew each other.
  • It is not stated how the second teen was injured, or whether he was involved in the confrontation or was a bystander.
  • The weapon remains unclear: police refer to a suspected stabbing, while News.co.il reported an axe attack and Ynet said an axe found at the scene had not been linked to the killing.
  • No report says whether any suspects have been identified, arrested or questioned.
  • Beyond the police assessment of a dispute between criminals, no details of the alleged dispute or of the people involved have been given.

How we checked this

The incident and the 17-year-old's death were reported by Magen David Adom, N12, Ynet and News.co.il; the death was reported by the three news outlets, not by MDA. The axe detail comes from Ynet and News.co.il, which differ on its role, and police describe a suspected stabbing.
