How it is worked out
30 minutes before sunset in Haifa
Sunset is calculated from Haifa's coordinates with the standard sunrise equation, then 30 minutes are taken off it. That is the whole method, and it lands within about two minutes of a printed community calendar.
Most cities use 18 minutes, and most of Israel 20. Haifa is one of the exceptions, and this page follows the local custom rather than the general one.
Saturday night
Havdalah, when three stars are out
Shabbat ends at nightfall, taken here as the sun reaching 8.5 degrees below the horizon: the point at which three medium stars would be visible. Some communities wait longer, so treat the minute as close rather than binding.
Other cities
Astronomical calculation, ±2 minutes. Follow your community's published times for observance.
