A dairy and vegetarian restaurant with a stone oven from Naples, in a garden at the entrance to Moshav Beit Nehemia near Shoham

Benno is a dairy and vegetarian restaurant, kosher by its own account, in a large garden at the entrance to Moshav Beit Nehemia, near Shoham, where the tables are spread under the trees, beside flower beds and in the sun. At its centre stands a large stone tabun the owners brought from Naples, which bakes the pizzas, the pastas and lasagnes in clay dishes, the folded focaccias and the desserts; breakfast is served until noon. The chef, Meir Karnash, grew up in a farming family in Yavne'el in the Lower Galilee, trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Australia and studied restaurant management at SHMS in Switzerland. Its site tells how, in the first days of the war, he set up a centre at the restaurant handing out home-cooked meals to soldiers, evacuees and hostages' families, where he met his partner Dafna, who came to volunteer; with some 650 volunteers they sent out about 70,000 meals. A second Benno has opened in a eucalyptus grove in Moshav Hemed.
