Caesarea National Park, the Old Port, Caesarea

A chef's restaurant in the national park at Caesarea's old port, cooking local fish, aged meat and foraged herbs in a taboon and over open fire.

Helena has stood in a bay of Caesarea's old port since 2004, run by chef Amos Sion and his partner Uri Yeremias, and its site says the sea can be seen from every corner of the room, among the excavated antiquities of the harbour. The menu is contemporary Israeli and seasonal, built on fish from the local catch, aged meats and wild herbs gathered along the coast, with pizzas and focaccia from a wood-fired taboon, oysters from Brittany and mains such as sea bream on homemade gnocchi or a 350 g aged sirloin. A tasting meal for two costs 450 to 500 shekels and changes with the season. The wine list leans on the wineries of nearby Binyamina and Zikhron Ya'akov, and a private room with a sea view seats 40, with a covered terrace on the water for events of up to 100.
