Kibbutz Degania Bet, Degania Bet

A chocolate maker's farm in Kibbutz Degania Bet near the Sea of Galilee, with chocolate workshops for families, a factory shop and a garden café

Galita is a chocolate farm founded by a chocolatier who grew up on Kibbutz Afikim and spent three years from 1999 studying chocolate and ice cream in Belgium; after starting out in Kiryat Ono, she opened the farm at Degania Bet on 1 April 2007, and a second one now runs at Kibbutz Tzuba in the Jerusalem hills. A visit, booked ahead, begins with a film on the story of chocolate and of Galita, goes on to a hands-on workshop for adults or children, from chocolate lollipops to 3D chocolate cars and houses and dipped pralines, and ends with a riddle challenge for a sweet prize. The factory shop sells its pralines, chocolate bars, liqueurs and gift boxes, and the café in its green garden serves coffee, chocolate drinks, ice cream made on the premises, sweet Belgian waffles and savoury Liège-style waffle sandwiches. The farm is kosher mehadrin and dairy under the rabbinate, and in August and on the intermediate days of Passover and Sukkot it stays open later.
