Kitron Winery, Hoshaya, Hoshaya

A family winery on a lookout over the Jezreel Valley in Hoshaya, built to move its wine by gravity, with tastings, tours and a wine village for weddings and events

Kitron is a family winery on a lookout in the Jezreel Valley, at the edge of the old Galilee wine country, and its site says it is the only winery in Israel, and one of few in the world, built on the gravity method. Its vines grow in small plots, the grapes are picked by hand and the wine ages in French oak; a bottle takes five years from vineyard to release. The reds include a Cabernet Sauvignon from its vineyard on the Golan Heights and a Shiraz from the Manara vineyard in the Upper Galilee, aged 48 months in oak, and Sumka, its flagship, made only in exceptional vintages and aged 60 months. A member of the family leads the visits, from a 30-minute tasting of three wines to a culinary visit of two and a half hours, and the wine village around the winery hosts weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs and company events.
