Route 424, the old road to Jerusalem, Kfar Shmuel, Kfar Shmuel

A family estate winery in Kfar Shmuel, on the old road to Jerusalem, making about 7,000 bottles a year, with a visitor centre among its vines

Braun Winery is the family estate winery of Dina and Daniel Braun in Kfar Shmuel, on Route 424, the old road to Jerusalem, in the Gezer area of the Judean Lowlands. Daniel, a mechanical engineer, planted Merlot and Syrah on the family's land and later Petit Verdot, Ruby Cabernet and Marselan; the first harvest was in 2009, and the winery now makes about 7,000 bottles a year, its reds from its own vineyards and its whites from grapes grown in the Jerusalem hills. The wines are named after the women of the family and come in four series: Rock, Country, Jazz and Retro. At the visitor centre guests tour the vineyard and taste three to five wines, while the M&J bakery serves pastries that change daily, focaccia, salads, small bites, sandwiches, freshly ground coffee and cheese platters. In the harvest season it sells grapes to people who make their own wine, by arrangement.
