Moshav Neot HaKikar, Neot HaKikar

A desert camp lodge on Moshav Neot HaKikar, between the Dead Sea and the Arava: group lodges, wooden cabins, tents and two converted buses around a bar, a campfire dome and a ring of hammocks

Shkedi's Camplodge is owned and run by Gil Shkedi, who left the centre of the country for the desert nearly 20 years ago, led jeep tours, and more than a decade ago began building a place to host hikers, slowly and with his own hands. It stands on Moshav Neot HaKikar, between the Dead Sea and the Arava, close to trails such as Nahal Peratzim, Mount Sodom, the Small Crater, Nahal Tamar and Gavei Peres, about half an hour's drive from the Dead Sea. Groups, families and single travellers sleep in four wooden group lodges, two wooden cabins, two tents or two converted buses with private yards, and three guest cabins with jacuzzis stand five minutes' walk away. In the shared grounds each group gets its own seating and dining corner with a barbecue; hammocks hang in a circle under a geodesic dome, a central campfire burns under another on winter nights, and the bar sells beer, soft drinks, pizzas and the dates from Shkedi's own grove.
