2 HaRishonim Street, Or Yehuda

A kosher grill and shawarma restaurant in Or Yehuda's old centre that grew out of a kebab stand founded in 1952.

By its site, Sarah and Isaac Doanias founded a stand selling kebabs in a pita in 1952, to a recipe from the Izmir region of Turkey; its name spread across the Ono Valley, it became an institution and people came to call it 'at the Turk's'. In 1978 the stand settled in a 45-square-metre shop as a 20-seat restaurant, and today it seats 170. It serves salads, skewers of many kinds, shawarma and fish, has gluten-free pitas and dishes, welcomes children, takes groups of up to 50 and does takeaway. Mako's 2025 guide to Or Yehuda found two shawarma spits, a large turkey one and a smaller veal one, and pitas packed with meat by eleven in the morning.
