Kibbutz Parod, Parod

The visitor centre and factory shop of a family olive-oil maker at Kibbutz Parod, where the oil is cold-pressed and the tahini is ground on millstones.

Saba Habib is named for the grandfather who, by its site, founded the family's tradition of growing olives and pressing oil in the Galilee a hundred years ago. The company that carries his name, Shemen Zayit Saba Habib Ltd, keeps its visitor centre and factory shop at Kibbutz Parod. At the centre visitors hear how the oil is cold-pressed, with a traditional millstone set inside a modern press, and how tahini is ground on millstones, and they taste the range at a tasting table that its site says is always laid; the visit is free. The shop sells extra virgin olive oil in many sizes, a varietal series (Souri, Picual, Koroneiki and Kalamata), unfiltered baladi oil, olives cured the home way without preservatives, tahini of pure sesame, za'atar, olive-oil soaps and cosmetics based on olive oil. Its site gives the factory shop's opening hours as 09:00 to 17:00, and groups can arrange ahead a light meal of pita with za'atar from the taboon, tahini, olives and coffee or tea.
