Rota Winery is a boutique desert winery on an ecological lone farm in the Halutza sands, on the bank of Nahal Revivim, set up in late summer 2004 by Erez Rota, an artist, farmer and winemaker; the winery itself began in 1999 in a small studio in Tel Aviv. Its vines grow organically among the terraces of an ancient Nabataean farm, about 300 metres up in loess, sand and pebbles, watered with desalinated Mediterranean water: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Muscat of Alexandria, picked by hand at night and aged in French oak, about 10,000 bottles a year, all from its own single vineyard. The farm also has Erez Rota's painting and sculpture studio and a sculpture garden, a visitors' centre for up to 80 people, wine tours and tastings for groups of up to 40, and art and personal-growth workshops. For overnight stays it has a wide khan lined with mats and heated by a wood stove in winter, a camping area and a paddling pool facing the dunes, and a hikers' cabin for up to 12, and it hosts family events and parties.
