77 Rothschild Street, Rishon LeZion

A sandwich bar on Rothschild Street whose story began in 2009, with breakfasts and sandwiches by day and a bar at night until 02:30

Bernard is a sandwich bar on Rothschild Street, the nightlife street in the old centre of Rishon LeZion. By its own account its story began in 2009, when Michael, a barber, closed his barbershop, which he called "My Barbershop", and the local paper Gal Gefen names its owners as the brothers Ofer and Michael Ein Shai. It opens at 08:00, and breakfast is served until 15:00, from avocado on sourdough and a shakshuka with baladi aubergine and harissa to a big breakfast plate. By midday it is a sandwich bar, with sandwiches on a baguette that each have a name of their own, among them Simba the Lion King with entrecôte strips, the Septa Zepta schnitzel sandwich and a 220-gram burger, beside cheese sandwiches, salads, pastas and plates. At night, by its own account, the sandwich bar turns into a bar, with draught beer, cocktails and wine until 02:30. Its logo is a bear over the words "Sandwich & Fine Beer", and its website calls it "the bear". It seats guests inside and outside, takes table bookings on Ontopo, delivers through its own ordering site to Rishon LeZion and the towns around it, from Be'er Ya'akov and Ness Ziona to Rehovot, and through Wolt, and makes trays of sandwiches and salads for events. Locals, mako's Lin Levi wrote in 2024, credit Michael and Ofer, who opened it, with starting the culinary revival of the city centre, and many of the people who later opened places of their own in the city learned the trade there. In 2021 Itzik Barel, a co-owner of Soho, told Walla that he starts his day there with coffee, breakfast or what he called the best sandwich in town, and in 2026 Ontopo's magazine put it eighth of ten nightlife spots in the city, a sandwich bar by day and the happiest pub on Rothschild at night. In November 2022 the brothers opened a second room next door, at Rothschild 79, for private events of up to 40 people and sports broadcasts, Gal Gefen reported; in 2026, mako reported, Rothschild 79 is the address of Pizza Louise, the New York-style pizzeria they opened with a pizzaiolo.
