35 Jerusalem Street, Safed

A chef's restaurant of Jewish food and meats from its own smoker, in the Mendi's house on Jerusalem Street in Safed's Old City

Bashert is the chef's restaurant of Beit Mendi's, a 700-square-metre house of Jewish food in a stone building on the pedestrian street of Safed's Old City. Its menu sets dishes from the Jewish kitchens of Europe beside meats from the house smoker: clear chicken soup with kneidlach and kreplach, liver blintzes, brisket, asado and fresh fish. By the site's account the building used to be Bank Leumi's, and the bank's vault in the cellar now holds the freezer and the rooms where the meat is aged before 18 hours in the smoker. The name is Yiddish for what is meant to be. The same house holds a Shabbat food shop, an event hall, a catering kitchen and, 50 metres away, the dairy café Mendi's Bagels.
