Yohanan Ben Zakai Street, beside the Tomb of Maimonides, Tiberias

A boutique winery in a restored 1929 basalt house beside the Tomb of Maimonides in Tiberias, with four villas to stay in and a garden with pools

Berenice is a boutique winery in a basalt house on Yohanan Ben Zakai Street, beside the Tomb of Maimonides, built in 1929 as the home of Esther and Aharon Amsalem, the grandparents of Esti Badt. Her husband Gidi Badt, an architect who studied winemaking with Nir Shaham at the Sorek winery and has made his own wine since 2010, founded the winery there and named it after Mount Berenice, whose peak can be seen from the yard. It makes about 10,000 bottles a year of red, white, rosé and port-style wine from grapes grown at Moshav Dalton and nearby vineyards, and its site says its 2013 Cabernet won a gold medal in 2016; Gidi also makes a separate mehadrin kosher series called Sanhedrin. On Thursdays and Fridays it opens for wine meetings with the winemaker and for tables of wine and cheese, and the restored compound has four villas, a shared garden with a pool and space for events.
