51 Moshav Tzofar, Tzofar

A family winery in a former pepper packing house on Moshav Tzofar, making wine from desert grapes grown near Mitzpe Ramon.

Its site calls Moa the first winery founded in the Arava. Yehuda and Tzvia Friedman settled on Moshav Tzofar in the early 1980s to farm, and in 2014 the family turned the building where Yehuda packed peppers, and the cold rooms once used for flowers, into a small winery; the first harvest was in 2015. The grapes come from desert vineyards around Mitzpe Ramon, and the winery is named after the ancient Moa fortress near the moshav, a way station on the Nabataean Incense Route. Its visitors' centre on the family farm pours guided tastings of four wines with Negev cheeses, local dips and bread, and stays open until 22:30 on Thursdays.
