Deir Rafat, above the Sorek valley, Tzora

A family winery at Deir Rafat above the Sorek valley, founded in 2001, with a visitor centre and shop open every day of the week

Mony Winery was founded in 2001 by Shakib Artul, an olive merchant from the Galilee village of Maghar who leased farmland above the Sorek valley and planted vines, and it is named after his son, Dr Mony Artul; the family, Christian Arabs from the Galilee, moved to the Judean Hills. Some 1,000 dunams of vines grow on the hills around the winery, which makes red, white, rosé and dessert wines as well as olive oil, and ages some of its wine in barrels in a natural limestone cave kept at 17 degrees. Its chief winemaker since 2014 is Sasson Ben Aharon, and the winery has held a kosher certificate since 2005. The visitor centre is open every day from 09:00 to 17:00, at weekends without booking, and its shop also sells olive oil, olives, cheeses from boutique dairies, spreads, crackers and jams.
