IDF says 285 ultra-Orthodox men enlisted in a week, all in support roles
The military says 285 Haredi recruits joined combat support units as a November-December intake opens, with more draft days, including for combat units, planned.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says 285 men from the ultra-Orthodox, or Haredi, community joined the army over the past week. The Times of Israel reported the military's figure, adding that every one of the new recruits has been assigned to a combat support role rather than a frontline fighting unit.
According to the army, this intake is the start of a wider November-December enlistment period. Over the coming two months it plans further draft days for ultra-Orthodox recruits, and some of those will be for combat units. Israeli broadcaster N12, in a report by its correspondent Eli Hirschman, described the 285 as soldiers who entered combat support tracks through a dedicated recruitment route for the Haredi public, within a November-December cycle that began last week.

A total of 285 members of the ultra-Orthodox community enlisted in the military over the past week, the IDF says. The 285 young Haredi men have been placed in combat support roles, and over the next two months there will be additional draft days for ultra-Orthodox soldiers as Show more
What the army said
In its statement, the IDF said the receiving units and induction bases had made preparations for the newcomers so that service could "accommodate their way of life". That phrase refers to the religious requirements of strictly observant men, which the military has long treated as a condition for bringing more of them into uniform.
The army also said it welcomed the recruits and intends to keep widening the integration of ultra-Orthodox men into what it called "meaningful military service", while respecting their religious lifestyle. It framed that goal as part of its commitment to national security and to the resilience of Israeli society, according to the Times of Israel account.
The figure was first circulated by Emanuel Fabian, the Times of Israel's military correspondent, in a post on X and on his Telegram channel, attributing it to the IDF.

Who the Haredim are and why this is contested
Haredi Jews, usually called ultra-Orthodox in English, are the most religiously strict stream of Israeli Judaism. Many men in the community devote their young adult years to full-time Torah study in yeshivas, religious seminaries, and community leaders have historically resisted military service as a threat to that way of life.
For most Jewish Israelis, army service is compulsory. Ultra-Orthodox men, however, have for decades been able to defer or avoid it. The Times of Israel noted that exemptions for this community have become a major source of political and social friction in Israel, and that the IDF has repeatedly spoken of an urgent need for more personnel.

The tension is visible on the street. A photograph published alongside the Times of Israel report showed ultra-Orthodox men protesting against the conscription of Haredim outside the IDF recruitment centre at Tel Hashomer on November 1, 2026. Tel Hashomer is a large military base in central Israel where new recruits report for induction.
Combat support versus combat
All 285 recruits in this round went to combat support positions. In the Israeli army, that category covers roles that back up fighting units, such as logistics, maintenance and technical work, as distinct from infantry, armour and other frontline formations. The IDF says later draft days in this enlistment period will include intake for combat units, but it has not said how many ultra-Orthodox recruits it expects there.
N12's description of a dedicated track matters here. The army has built separate service frameworks for Haredi soldiers, designed to address concerns such as gender-separated settings and religious observance, and the IDF statement's reference to units preparing a suitable framework points to those arrangements.
How the reports compare
The two organisations agree on the central figure of 285 and on the assignment to combat support roles. The Times of Israel frames the number as enlistments over the past week; N12 places it in a November-December cycle that began last week. These descriptions are consistent rather than contradictory. Only the Times of Israel material carries the army's statements about future combat draft days and its commitment to wider integration. All of the figures originate with the military itself.
What the reports do not say
The reports do not say how many ultra-Orthodox men the army called up in this period, so it is not possible to tell whether 285 meets, exceeds or falls short of what was expected. They give no target for the full November-December intake and no number for the planned combat draft days. No response from ultra-Orthodox political or rabbinic leaders to these enlistments has been reported, and the coverage does not say how the 285 compare with earlier intakes.

The figure of 285 enlistments was reported by both The Times of Israel and N12, and both attribute it to the military. The army's statements about future combat draft days and its integration goals appear only in the Times of Israel material and remain the IDF's own claims.
