A tanker has been attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre (UKMTO), the British agency that tracks security incidents affecting merchant ships in the region. Israeli broadcaster N12, through its correspondent Asaf Rosenzweig, reported that UKMTO had issued an update on the attacked vessel.

The Israeli news site News.co.il, also citing UKMTO, described the ship as an oil tanker and said, attributing the claim to unnamed reports, that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had fired a missile at it, striking the vessel and setting it on fire. The same outlet said the condition of the crew was not clear. No casualty figures, ship name or flag state had been published in the reports available at the time of writing.

What UKMTO is

UKMTO is run by the British Royal Navy and acts as a point of contact between military forces and commercial shipping in the waters around the Arabian Peninsula. Ships passing through the area are encouraged to report their movements to it, and when a vessel reports an incident, such as an approach by unknown craft, a boarding or an explosion, UKMTO typically issues a short advisory warning other ships nearby. Its notices are usually brief and factual: they tend to give a location and a description of what the crew reported, and often leave questions of responsibility to governments and investigators.

Hebrew-language outlets often refer to the agency as the British maritime trade centre, which is how both Israeli reports describe it.

Why the Strait of Hormuz matters

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and, beyond it, the open sea. Iran lies on its northern shore and Oman on its southern side. It is the only sea route out of the Gulf for oil and gas exporters such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which makes it one of the most important shipping lanes for global energy supplies. Any attack on a tanker there tends to draw immediate attention from shipping insurers, energy markets and naval forces operating in the area.

The Revolutionary Guard and Gulf shipping

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a branch of Iran's armed forces that operates separately from the country's regular military and answers to the Supreme Leader. It has its own naval force, which patrols the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz with fast boats and has in the past stopped and seized foreign merchant vessels in those waters. Iranian officials have also repeatedly warned that the strait could be closed in a confrontation with the country's adversaries.

In this case, the attribution of the strike to the Revolutionary Guard comes from News.co.il, which framed it as what reports were saying rather than as a confirmed finding. The N12 report did not name any party as responsible, and neither report quoted UKMTO itself as identifying an attacker.

How the two reports compare

Both Israeli outlets agree on the core facts: UKMTO reported that a tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. N12's update was limited to that single point. News.co.il went further, describing the vessel as an oil tanker, saying a missile hit it and caused a fire, naming the Revolutionary Guard as the force that launched it, and noting uncertainty over the crew. Those additional details appear in only one of the two reports and were presented as unconfirmed.

What the reports do not say

  • Neither report names the tanker, its owner, its flag or its destination.
  • The condition of the crew is unknown, and no information on injuries or deaths has been reported.
  • The claim that the Revolutionary Guard fired the missile is attributed to unspecified reports in a single outlet; no response from Iran has been reported.
  • No reaction from the British government, from the Gulf states or from the vessel's operators appears in the material.
  • The extent of the fire and the damage to the ship, and whether any cargo leaked, have not been described.

Two Israeli outlets, N12 and News.co.il, reported that UKMTO said a tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. The missile strike, the fire and the attribution to Iran's Revolutionary Guard come only from News.co.il, citing unspecified reports, and have not been independently verified.
