Israel's military and security agency say they killed a Hamas Nukhba platoon commander who helped lead the October 7 raid on the Kissufim outpost and took part in abductions.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) say they killed a Hamas commander they accuse of helping lead the assault on the Kissufim army outpost during the Hamas attack of October 7. In a joint statement published by the IDF spokesperson, the two bodies named him as Hisham Jamal Muhammad Abu Ghala and described him as a platoon commander in the Nukhba force of Hamas' military wing. According to the statement, he also took part in the abduction of Israelis that day.
The strike was carried out in the Khan Younis area of the southern Gaza Strip on a Monday in the week before the announcement, the IDF said. In a post on X, the IDF said that Abu Ghala had recently been advancing attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers and working to rebuild Hamas' capabilities, which it called a systematic violation of the ceasefire. The military said he was killed to remove the threat he posed.

Who announced it
The IDF is Israel's military. The ISA, widely known in Israel by its Hebrew acronym Shin Bet (also rendered Shabak), is the country's domestic security service, responsible for counterterrorism intelligence. Announcements of this kind are often issued jointly when the security agency supplied intelligence for a strike carried out by the military. All of the details about Abu Ghala's role, his alleged recent activity and the circumstances of the strike come from these two bodies.
A third account came from Joe Truzman, an analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), a Washington research institute that tracks militant groups. Truzman relayed the Israeli military's claim, writing that the commander had headed a raid on the army's Kissufim position on October 7, 2023, and had participated in abductions. His post attributes these points to the IDF rather than presenting independent findings.
What the Nukhba force is
Nukhba, an Arabic word meaning "elite", is the name used for the special forces units of Hamas' armed wing. Israeli officials have identified Nukhba fighters as forming the core of the attackers who crossed from Gaza into southern Israel on October 7. Since then, the IDF has repeatedly announced the killing of individuals it identifies as Nukhba commanders, frequently linking them to specific locations struck during the attack. A platoon commander sits at a relatively junior level of command, leading a small unit within a larger battalion structure.
Kissufim and Khan Younis
Kissufim is a community in southern Israel close to the Gaza border, and the military outpost bearing its name was among the army positions along the frontier that came under assault on October 7. The IDF's statements describe Abu Ghala as one of those who led the raid on that outpost.
Khan Younis is one of the largest cities in the southern Gaza Strip and has been the site of extensive fighting and repeated Israeli strikes. The IDF's description of the strike gives only the general area, not a precise location or the method used.
The ceasefire context
The IDF framed the killing as a response to violations of the ceasefire in Gaza, saying Abu Ghala had been acting against it by planning attacks and helping Hamas recover its capabilities. Israel has used this justification for a number of targeted strikes in the period since the ceasefire took effect. The reports do not include any response from Hamas, and the claim of a violation is Israel's characterisation.
A discrepancy in the name
The two IDF publications give the commander's name as Hisham Jamal Muhammad Abu Ghala. Truzman's post refers to him as Hisham Jalala. The sources do not explain the difference, which may reflect transliteration from Arabic or an error, and we have not been able to establish which rendering is correct.
What the reports do not say
The announcements do not give the exact date of the strike beyond describing it as a Monday the week before publication. They do not say how the strike was carried out, whether anyone else was killed or injured, or whether there were civilian casualties. They offer no evidence for the claims about Abu Ghala's role on October 7 or his recent activity, and they do not specify which attacks he is alleged to have been advancing. There is no comment from Hamas or from authorities in Gaza in the material, and no independent confirmation of his death.
