Eyal Zamir told senior commanders the army is closing its October 7 investigations, and N12 reports he named 2027 a year for studying the whole war.

Israel's military chief, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, gathered the army's senior commanders on October 4, 2026 for a conference devoted to the lessons of the October 7 attack, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson. In remarks released by the military, Zamir said he had deliberately called the forum on the eve of the national memorial day for October 7, and that the army was now bringing its investigations into the failures of that day to a close, with the aim of learning from them rather than being dragged down by them.
During the event, Zamir gave a certificate of appreciation to a Chief Warrant Officer identified only as "Vav", who serves in the signals intelligence Unit 8200. The Times of Israel reported that before October 7, 2023 she had warned that Hamas had a clear plan to attack Israel, and that senior intelligence officers dismissed what she said. The conference took place at the Glilot Base, according to a photo caption carried by the same outlet.

What the conference covered
The Israeli broadcaster N12, in a report by its military correspondent Nir Dvori, said the meeting marked the completion of the October 7 investigations and presented the current status of putting their findings into practice. According to N12, the main lessons were laid out along with the oversight mechanisms meant to track their implementation. N12 also reported that Zamir announced 2027 would be designated as a year for investigating the entire war and extracting its lessons. That announcement does not appear in the excerpts of the IDF statement or the Times of Israel reports available to us.
In the portion of his speech released by the military, Zamir said that one of the army's greatest lessons was the need to "expand our margin of security". The Times of Israel quoted him as saying the force structure must be built for threats across multiple arenas, and that "the size of the IDF is our strategic depth." The IDF spokesperson's text also has Zamir describing the military as acting in all arenas, defending forward and pursuing its enemies, and warning that anyone who builds the means to harm Israel would be struck in advance.
Who Chief Warrant Officer "Vav" is
Israeli military personnel in sensitive intelligence roles are often identified publicly only by the first letter of their name. "Vav" is the sixth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Unit 8200 is the IDF's signals intelligence unit, responsible for intercepting and analysing communications.
The reports describe her warning in slightly different terms. The Times of Israel and its military correspondent Emanuel Fabian wrote that she had flagged a clear Hamas plan to attack Israel. N12 said she had warned that Hamas was prepared for a broad surprise attack. Both accounts agree that her assessment came before October 7 and that it was not acted upon; the Times of Israel specifies that senior intelligence officers rejected it.
Why the October 7 investigations matter
On October 7, 2023, Hamas carried out an assault on Israel that the reports describe as a massacre and an onslaught. The military has since been conducting internal investigations into how its intelligence and operational systems failed that day. Zamir framed the conference as the point at which those inquiries conclude and the focus shifts to applying their findings. The timing, three years after the attack and one day before a national memorial day for it, was presented by Zamir himself as intentional.
Wording of the quoted speech differs slightly between versions. The IDF's own English text has Zamir saying the army must not "sink into" the failures, while the Times of Israel rendered the same idea as not becoming "mired in them". The difference appears to reflect translation from Hebrew rather than a change in substance, but the reports do not say which version is the official rendering.
What the reports do not say
None of the reports set out the specific lessons that were presented to commanders, or describe the oversight mechanisms N12 mentions in any detail. They do not say what, if anything, happened to the senior intelligence officers who dismissed the warning from "Vav", or whether her recognition was connected to any finding about them. The announcement that 2027 will be devoted to investigating the whole war is attributed to N12 alone, and the reports do not explain how such a process would be organised or who would carry it out. The released excerpts of Zamir's speech are also partial, so his full remarks are not available.

How we checked this
The conference and the award to "Vav" were reported by the IDF spokesperson, The Times of Israel and N12, and Zamir's quotes come from the military's own released text. The designation of 2027 as a year for studying the whole war is reported only by N12.
