IDF says airstrike in Gaza City killed Hamas commander Ammar al-Sharafi
The Israeli military says it killed a Hamas military wing commander it accused of planning attacks during the ceasefire. Reports differ on the rank of the man killed.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say an Israeli aircraft struck the Gaza City area on Wednesday and killed Ammar Mahmoud Muhammad Sharafi, whom the military described as a platoon commander in the military wing of Hamas. In a statement posted by the IDF spokesperson the following morning, the army accused him of advancing attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians and of working to rebuild the group's capabilities, which it called a systematic violation of the ceasefire agreement.
The military said the strike was carried out to remove what it called the threat he posed. The Times of Israel, reporting the IDF announcement, gave his name as Ammar Mahmoud Muhammad al-Sharafi and noted that Palestinian media had reported on Wednesday that a strike in Gaza City killed four people. Hebrew-language outlets Ynet and N12 also carried the military's account.

What the IDF says he did
The accusations against the man come entirely from the military. According to the IDF, he had recently been promoting plans for attacks on troops and on Israeli civilians, and was involved in efforts to restore Hamas's capacity to fight. The IDF's post on X repeated the same points in shorter form. The army quoted in English said he was acting "while systematically violating the ceasefire agreement" and was killed to "remove the threat he posed."
The military did not publish details of any specific attack he is alleged to have planned, nor evidence supporting the allegations. It is standard practice for the IDF to announce the name and role of people it says it has targeted, often the day after a strike, as happened here.
A discrepancy over his rank
The reports do not fully agree on the position he held. The IDF's own English statements, both on its official Telegram channel and on X, call him a platoon commander. The Hebrew reports from Ynet and N12 use the term mefaked machlaka, which also translates as platoon commander. The Times of Israel and its military correspondent Emanuel Fabian, however, described him as a company commander, as identified by the military. In military structures a company is a larger unit made up of several platoons, so the two descriptions are not interchangeable. This article uses the IDF's own English wording while noting the difference.
There is also a small variation in how his name was rendered. The IDF wrote Sharafi; the Times of Israel added the Arabic article to give al-Sharafi. N12's Hebrew transliteration of his middle name differs slightly from the other reports.
Context: Gaza City and the ceasefire
Gaza City is the main urban centre of the Gaza Strip, the coastal territory governed by Hamas, which borders Israel and Egypt. Hamas is an Islamist movement with a political leadership and an armed military wing; Israel, the United States and the European Union classify it as a terrorist organisation. The IDF statements refer to the organisation's military wing, the armed structure organised into units such as companies and platoons.
The statements place the strike within a ceasefire that Israel says Hamas is violating. The reports do not describe the terms of that agreement, who is enforcing it, or how often strikes of this kind have occurred since it took effect. The Israeli military has, during the ceasefire, presented strikes in Gaza as responses to what it says are breaches or imminent threats, and the language in this announcement follows that pattern.
The Hebrew word mechabel, used in the N12 report and rendered in the IDF's English as "the terrorist," is the standard term in Israeli official and media usage for a militant or attacker.
What the reports do not say
None of the reports confirms that the strike described by Palestinian media, in which four people were reported killed, is the same strike that the IDF says killed Sharafi. The Times of Israel mentioned the Palestinian report alongside the IDF announcement but did not link the two directly. The identities of any other people killed or wounded are not given.
The reports do not give the precise location of the strike within the Gaza City area, the time it took place, or what kind of aircraft or munition was used. There is no response from Hamas or from Palestinian officials in the material, and no independent confirmation of the IDF's description of Sharafi's role or activities. Nor do the reports say whether the strike has prompted any reaction from the mediators or parties to the ceasefire.

How we checked this
The strike and identification were reported by the IDF spokesperson, the IDF on X, The Times of Israel, Ynet and N12, but all accounts rely on the Israeli military's statement. His alleged activities and role remain the IDF's claims, and the reports of four killed come from Palestinian media cited by The Times of Israel.
