IDF says strike killed Nukhba commander tied to tank crew abduction

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it killed a commander in Hamas's Nukhba force in an airstrike in the Khan Younis area of the southern Gaza Strip, naming him as Jihad Samih Mahmoud Ismail. According to the IDF spokesperson's statement, the strike was carried out last Thursday and Ismail led a Nukhba squad in the military wing of Hamas.

The military said Ismail crossed from the southern Gaza Strip into Israeli territory during the October 7 attack and took part in the encounter with the crew of an Armored Corps tank, and in the abduction of three of its soldiers. In its English-language announcement, the IDF named the abducted soldiers as Captain Omer Neutra, Staff Sergeant Oz Daniel and Sergeant Nimrod Cohen, and said the tank's driver, Sergeant Shaked Dahan, was killed during the encounter.

What the Nukhba force is

Nukhba, an Arabic word meaning elite, is the name given to Hamas's commando units, which the IDF describes as part of the group's military wing. These units led the ground assault into Israeli communities and army positions on October 7, 2023, crossing the perimeter fence around the Gaza Strip at multiple points. Since then the IDF has regularly published announcements identifying individual Nukhba operatives it says it has killed, often listing the specific role it attributes to them on that day. This announcement follows that pattern: the military ties a named individual both to a particular incident in October 7, 2023 and to later activity during the war.

Where the strike took place

Khan Younis is one of the main cities of the southern Gaza Strip and has been a focus of Israeli operations through the war. Times of Israel military correspondent Emanuel Fabian reported that the strike took place on Thursday in Khan Younis and that the IDF identified Ismail as a squad commander in the Nukhba force. The IDF said in its statement that the strike was intended to remove the threat he posed, and that recently and over the course of the war he had been involved in ambushes and attacks aimed at harming Israeli troops.

Tank No. 3 and the fighting near Nirim

The incident the IDF attributes to Ismail involved an Armored Corps tank crew deployed to the Gaza border area. The IDF's account refers to the soldiers of Tank No. 3. Fabian reported that the battle took place near the community of Nirim, a kibbutz in the area bordering the Gaza Strip. The three soldiers named by the military, Neutra, Daniel and Cohen, have been among the most widely known cases in Israel of soldiers taken from the border area on October 7, 2023, and their families have campaigned publicly for their return.

The Israeli news site Ynet reported the same identification, describing Ismail as the head of the Nukhba squad that took part in the abduction of the three, and noting the IDF's stated aim of removing the threat he posed. The Jerusalem Post also reported the announcement, publishing a graphic issued by the IDF Spokesperson's Unit identifying Ismail.

Where the accounts line up

The four organisations reporting the announcement give a consistent picture: the name of the man the IDF says it killed, his described role, the location of the strike in the Khan Younis area, and the day of the week on which the military says it was carried out. All of it rests on the IDF's own account. None of the reports cites a Hamas statement, a Gazan health authority figure, or any independent confirmation of the identity of the person killed.

What the reports do not say
