Israel says strike in Gaza City killed Hamas Northern Gaza Brigade chief al-Bik

An Israeli air strike overnight in Gaza City killed Izz al-Din al-Bik, the commander of Hamas's Northern Gaza Brigade, according to a joint announcement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz and to Palestinian media. The Times of Israel reported that Palestinian outlets placed the strike at an apartment in the al-Nasr neighbourhood, in the western part of the city.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA, also known as the Shin Bet) later issued their own confirmation. In a joint statement on the IDF spokesperson's channel, the two bodies said they had struck in northern Gaza and eliminated al-Bik, whom they described as head of the Northern Gaza Brigade in Hamas's military wing. The army also released footage it said showed the strike, according to N12.

Who al-Bik was, according to the reports

The military said al-Bik had held the post since the killing of his predecessor, Ahmed Ghandour, and that before that he served as the brigade's military intelligence officer. According to the army, as reported by The Times of Israel, Ghandour was killed by Israel on November 10, 2023.

The IDF and Shin Bet said al-Bik managed the brigade's operatives and directed them to carry out attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians. They also said he was working to rebuild the brigade's capabilities, which the army said had suffered "a fatal blow throughout the war." The military described the operation as "a precise aerial strike" and said al-Bik "posed an immediate threat" to troops and civilians.

Netanyahu and Katz accused him of advancing attacks on Israeli forces and recruiting new fighters. Their statement pledged to keep pursuing Hamas members "from its commanders to its last operative" until the group no longer exists in Gaza.

Palestinian media, as cited by Joe Truzman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, identified him by the nickname Abu Hamza and the alias "Ashmawi," and said he was killed at dawn.

An earlier attempt on his life

Several Israeli outlets said this was not the first time Israel had targeted him. Ynet reported that al-Bik was struck in May together with the deputy commander of Hamas's Gaza City Brigade, but that his death was never reported after that attack. Ynet described the earlier attempt as having taken place 4 months ago. Political commentator Amit Segal wrote that the earlier attempt was about half a year ago. The Hebrew-language channel Abu Ali Express described the killing as the third of a Hamas brigade commander in roughly two and a half weeks. That tally is attributed to that channel alone and is not repeated in the other reports.

The IDF statement locates the strike in northern Gaza; Palestinian media specify an apartment in western Gaza City. N12 described the target as al-Bik's home, while Palestinian media and Ynet referred to an apartment. His surname is also spelled several ways across the reports, including Bik, al-Bik and Bikh.

What the reports do not say

None of the reports gives any figure for other people killed or injured in the strike, or says whether anyone else was in the apartment. The reports do not name a successor, and they do not describe any response from Hamas beyond the Palestinian media accounts of his death.
