Man aged 23 from Yarka shot dead in Druze village of Isfiya

Police have opened an investigation into the killing of Amir Abu Hamda, which they believe was criminal, as a monitoring group puts Arab deaths to violence in 2026 at 193.

A man was shot dead early on Sunday in Isfiya, a Druze-majority village in northern Israel, and police have opened an investigation into the killing, which they suspect was a murder. The Times of Israel reported, citing police, that paramedics pronounced the man dead where he was found and that investigators believe the shooting had a criminal background.

The victim was named as Amir Abu Hamda, 23, a resident of the village of Yarka. Ynet identified him and reported that police described the likely background to the incident as criminal. N12 published the same name, age and home village.

What the emergency services reported

Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel's national emergency medical and ambulance service, said its call centre for the Carmel region received a report at 06:25 through its 101 emergency line about a man injured in a violent incident in Isfiya. According to the MDA spokesperson's statement, medics and paramedics found a man of about 25 showing no signs of life, with penetrating wounds, and declared him dead.

The MDA statement did not name the victim and did not specify the cause of the wounds. The description of a shooting comes from police, as relayed by the news outlets.

A discrepancy over age

The reports differ slightly on the victim's age. MDA described him as about 25, an estimate made at the scene. Ynet, N12 and a later Ynet alert, which named him, gave his age as 23. Ynet's own report carries both figures, describing a man of about 25 in its opening and then naming Abu Hamda as 23.

Isfiya, Yarka and the Druze community

Isfiya lies in the Carmel area, according to MDA's description of the region that handled the call. The Druze are an Arabic-speaking religious community whose members are citizens of Israel and live largely in villages in the north of the country. Yarka, where the victim lived, is also a Druze village in the north. The reports do not explain why a resident of Yarka was in Isfiya at the time of the shooting.

The wider toll of violence in Arab communities

Following the announcement of Abu Hamda's death, the Abraham Initiatives, an organisation that tracks deaths linked to crime and violence among Arab citizens of Israel, released updated figures. N12 reported that the group counts 193 Arab citizens killed in circumstances connected to crime and violence since the start of 2026, among them 13 women and girls.

The organisation said the toll for the same period of the previous year stood at 209, and described the current figure as a 7.5% decrease. The group's figures cover Arab citizens broadly; the reports do not state explicitly whether this killing is included in the total of 193.

Shootings in Arab and Druze towns in Israel are frequently reported by police as having a criminal background, a phrase Israeli police commonly use to indicate that they suspect links to organised crime, feuds or other criminal disputes rather than a nationalist or terror motive. In this case, the police assessment was described as preliminary in the reports, using language such as "likely" and "believe".

What the reports do not say

  • No report says whether any suspect has been identified, detained or arrested.
  • The reports do not describe the circumstances of the shooting: where exactly in Isfiya it took place, how many shots were fired, or whether anyone else was present or hurt.
  • Police have not set out what led them to their initial view that the killing was criminal in nature, nor any possible motive.
  • The reports do not say whether Abu Hamda was known to police.
  • The difference between MDA's estimated age of about 25 and the age of 23 given by Ynet and N12 has not been addressed by any of the organisations.
