A man was killed when a car exploded at the Pal-Yam junction on Road 4, close to the town of Or Akiva, in an incident reported by Israel's emergency medical service and two Hebrew-language news outlets. Magen David Adom said its Sharon region dispatch centre received a call at 21:34 about a vehicle that had blown up at the junction, and that its crews found a man unconscious at the scene.
In a follow-up message, Magen David Adom reported that its medics and paramedics treated the man and attempted resuscitation, but ultimately pronounced him dead with injuries affecting multiple body systems. Police opened an investigation, and N12 reported that officers stressed their preliminary inquiry indicates the incident has a criminal background.
On the ground
Federal officials in Minnesota have charged a man with a federal terrorism charge after they say he planned a shooting at the Mall of America using an AK-47 rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, according to court records unsealed Wednesday. CNN's Whitney Wild reports.

What the reports describe at the scene
Ynet reported that the vehicle was a Skoda Octavia and that it was filmed near a bus stop with its rear windscreen shattered. The outlet framed the event as a suspected targeted killing and said police were searching the area and gathering evidence. N12 published footage from the scene, credited to the police spokesperson's unit.
According to Ynet, the man who died had survived an earlier attempt on his life 5 months before. That detail appears only in the Ynet report and was not mentioned by Magen David Adom or N12.
Conflicting accounts of the victim's age
The reports do not agree on how old the man was. Magen David Adom's first message described him as a man of about 30, a figure also carried in an early Ynet alert. Its second message, confirming the death, described him as about 40. Ynet's fuller report gave his age as 25. None of the reports name him, and the discrepancy had not been resolved in the material available.
Who is investigating
N12 reported that the commander of the Israel Police Coastal District, Major General Yehiel Bohadana, came to the scene and held a situation assessment with senior officers. At the end of that meeting he assigned the case to the district's central investigative unit, which typically handles serious crime within a police district.
Context for readers outside Israel
Magen David Adom (MDA) is Israel's national emergency medical and ambulance service, the equivalent of a paramedic service elsewhere, and a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Its emergency number is 101, and its spokesperson's office issues brief real-time updates on incidents it responds to, often revising early details as crews learn more.
Or Akiva is a town on Israel's Mediterranean coastal plain. Road 4 is one of the country's main north-south highways running through that plain, and the Pal-Yam junction lies on it near the town. The Coastal District is the Israel Police district responsible for this area.
The Hebrew word Ynet used, chisul, literally means "elimination" and is the standard term in Israeli media for a targeted killing, most often in the context of organised crime. Car bombs and explosive devices planted in vehicles have been used in such killings in Israel, which is why reports of a vehicle exploding are frequently treated by police and media as a possible criminal attack from the outset. The police statement reported by N12 refers only to a criminal background and does not use the term itself.
What the reports do not say
- The man's identity has not been published, and his age differs across reports: about 30, about 40, or 25.
- None of the reports state what caused the explosion, whether an explosive device was found, or how it was detonated.
- It is not clear whether anyone else was in or near the car, or whether there were other injuries.
- The earlier attempt on the man's life is reported only by Ynet, with no details of where or how it happened.
- No arrests or suspects have been mentioned, and police have not described a motive beyond saying the background appears criminal.

How we checked this
The explosion and death were reported by Magen David Adom, Ynet and N12; the police comments come via N12. The car model, the earlier assassination attempt and the age of 25 are reported only by Ynet, and the victim's age is disputed across sources.
