A man of about 50 was seriously injured in a violent incident on HaTikva Street in Tel Aviv on Sunday evening, according to Magen David Adom, Israel's national emergency medical service. The service said its 101 emergency call centre for the Dan region received the report at 21:28, and that its medics and paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to Ichilov hospital. Magen David Adom described his condition as serious and said he had a head injury.

A short alert from Ynet, the news website, added a detail about how he was hurt. Ynet reported that the man had been struck and had then fallen, and it too gave his condition as serious. Neither report named the man, described anyone else involved or said whether anyone had been arrested.

Who reported the incident

Magen David Adom, often shortened to MDA, is Israel's equivalent of a national ambulance service and a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Its spokesperson's office issues brief statements on calls its crews attend, usually giving the time the call came in, the location, the approximate age and sex of the patient, the hospital they were taken to and a clinical assessment of their condition. Those statements describe the medical picture only. They do not establish what caused an injury or who was responsible, which is a matter for the police.

The number 101 is the emergency telephone line for MDA, separate from the police line. The Dan region, named in the statement, is the MDA district covering Tel Aviv and the surrounding cities of the central coastal plain, Israel's most densely populated area.

Ynet is the website of the Yedioth Ahronoth group and one of the most widely read news sites in Israel. Its alerts channel publishes very short items, often a single line, that point readers to a fuller story on the main site. The alert in this case linked to a longer item that was not part of the material available to us.

Where it happened

HaTikva Street runs through the HaTikva neighbourhood in the south-east of Tel Aviv. The name means "the hope" in Hebrew, the same word that gives Israel's national anthem its title. The area is best known to visitors for its open-air market and is a busy, working-class district, quite different in character from the beachfront and the central business areas that most tourists see.

Ichilov, where the man was taken, is the common name for the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, the city's main public hospital and one of the largest trauma centres in the country. Seriously injured patients from across central Tel Aviv are routinely brought there.

What "serious condition" means in Israeli reports

Israeli emergency services and hospitals use a fixed scale when describing patients: light, moderate, serious and critical, the last sometimes rendered as "in mortal danger". A patient described as being in serious condition has injuries that need significant medical intervention, but the term on its own does not mean the person's life is judged to be in immediate danger. Initial assessments made at the scene are frequently updated once a patient has been examined in hospital, sometimes upwards and sometimes downwards.

In this case, both organisations used the same classification, and MDA's description of a head injury is consistent with Ynet's account that the man was hit and fell.

How the two accounts compare

The two reports agree on the essential points: a man was hurt in Tel Aviv, violence was involved, and his condition was serious. MDA's statement is the more detailed of the two, supplying the street, the time of the call, the man's approximate age, the nature of his injury and the hospital. Ynet's alert does not name the street but adds the sequence of being struck and then falling. The reports do not contradict each other on any point.

What the reports do not say

Neither report includes any statement from the Israel Police, so it is not known whether an investigation has been opened, whether a suspect has been identified or detained, or what police believe led to the incident. The man's identity, and whether he knew whoever struck him, have not been reported. Nor has there been any update from Ichilov on his condition after he arrived at the hospital.

How we checked this

The incident was reported separately by Magen David Adom and by Ynet, which agree on the man's serious condition. The street, time, age, head injury and hospital come from MDA alone, and the detail that he was struck and fell comes from Ynet alone.
