A man aged about 50 was killed in a shooting in Arraba, a town in Israel's Lower Galilee, early in the morning. Ynet reported that he was critically wounded by gunfire and taken to hospital, where doctors were forced to pronounce him dead. According to the outlet, police have opened an investigation and describe the background as criminal.

Magen David Adom, Israel's national emergency medical service, said its call centre received a report at 05:49 of a man hurt in a violent incident in Arraba. In its statement, the service said paramedics and medics treated him at the scene and evacuated him in critical condition with penetrating injuries to the Northern Medical Center, known as Poriya, while carrying out resuscitation. A short alert from Ynet's breaking news channel later confirmed that the man wounded by gunfire in Arraba had died.

Where Arraba is

Arraba is an Arab town in the Galilee, the hilly region of northern Israel. Ynet placed the shooting in the Lower Galilee, the southern part of that region. The Galilee is home to a large share of Israel's Arab citizens, who make up a significant minority of the country's population and live mostly in their own towns and villages, as well as in a handful of mixed cities.

What Magen David Adom does

Magen David Adom, often shortened to MDA, is Israel's equivalent of a national ambulance and emergency medical service, and it is also the country's member of the international Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. Members of the public reach it by dialling 101, its emergency number. Calls are handled by regional dispatch centres; MDA said this report came in to its centre covering the Asher region in the north. When MDA crews treat a casualty, the service typically issues a brief statement giving the time of the call, the approximate age of the patient and his condition on evacuation. It does not usually comment on the cause of an incident beyond the nature of the injuries.

The Northern Medical Center, Poriya, is a government hospital serving the north of the country, and it receives many of the trauma cases from the surrounding area.

Violence in Arab communities

Ynet said that since the start of the year, 186 people from Arab society in Israel have been murdered. Killings of this kind, frequently shootings linked by police to criminal disputes, have become a central concern for Arab citizens and their community leaders, who have long called on the state to do more to confront organised crime and illegal weapons in their towns. The police statement that the background in Arraba is criminal places this death within that wider pattern, as Ynet framed it, though the reports give no detail about who was involved or why.

How the reports differ

The two organisations describe the incident in slightly different terms. MDA referred to a violent incident and to penetrating injuries, without specifying gunfire. Ynet and its alerts channel both said the man was shot. MDA's statement was issued while the man was still being treated and resuscitated, and it does not mention his death; Ynet reported that he was declared dead in hospital. These differences reflect the timing and remit of each organisation rather than a direct contradiction, but readers should note that the detail of a shooting comes from Ynet's reporting.

What the reports do not say

None of the reports names the man or gives any information about him beyond his approximate age. They do not say whether anyone has been arrested or identified as a suspect, how many shooters there were, or where in Arraba the shooting took place. Ynet attributes the criminal background to the police, but no report quotes a police statement directly or explains what that assessment rests on. It is also not stated whether anyone else was hurt. The figure of 186 killings comes from Ynet alone, and the report does not say how it was compiled or whether it includes this latest death.

How we checked this

The incident was reported by Magen David Adom and by Ynet. The man's death, the gunfire, the police assessment of a criminal background and the figure of 186 killings are attributed to Ynet alone; MDA described a violent incident with penetrating injuries.
