Two men hurt in violent incident at Tzrifin industrial zone, MDA says

Two people were injured in a violent incident at the Tzrifin industrial zone in central Israel, according to Magen David Adom, the country's national emergency medical service. MDA said its 101 dispatch centre for the Ayalon region received the call at 12:05.

MDA medics and paramedics treated the injured at the scene and took them to Shamir-Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. The service said the casualties were a man of about 40, in moderate condition, and a second person who was lightly hurt. Both had blunt injuries, which MDA described with the Hebrew word for bruising or trauma wounds rather than stab or gunshot wounds.

Who reported the incident

Magen David Adom, usually shortened to MDA, is Israel's national ambulance, emergency medical and blood service. Its name means "Red Shield of David", and it is the Israeli member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Its spokesperson's office regularly publishes short initial updates on incidents it responds to, typically giving the time of the call, the number of casualties, their approximate ages, their medical condition and the hospital they were taken to.

The number 101 is Israel's emergency line for medical help, answered by MDA dispatchers. The service divides the country into regions, and the Ayalon region covers an area of central Israel south and east of Tel Aviv.

Where Tzrifin is

Tzrifin lies in central Israel, in the area between the cities of Rishon LeZion, Ramla and Be'er Ya'akov. For decades it was known mainly as the site of a large military base. The area also hosts Shamir Medical Center, the hospital long known as Assaf Harofeh, which is why MDA refers to it by both names. The industrial zone, called a ta'asiyon in Hebrew, a word for a small industrial or business park, is close to the hospital, so the injured did not need to be taken far.

How MDA describes injuries

MDA uses a standard scale when reporting a casualty's state: light, moderate, serious and critical, with separate wording when a person is declared dead. A "moderate" classification generally means the injury is significant and requires hospital treatment but is not judged to be immediately life threatening at the time of evacuation. A "light" classification indicates minor injuries. These are initial field assessments by paramedics, and a patient's condition can be reassessed by the hospital after arrival.

The term MDA used for the injuries in this case refers to blunt trauma. In Israeli emergency reporting, stab wounds, gunshot wounds and injuries from being struck are normally described with different words, and the statement did not use the terms for stabbing or shooting.

What "violent incident" means in these reports

MDA's phrase, an "incident of violence", is a general description the service uses when people are hurt in an assault, brawl or other confrontation. It does not in itself indicate a motive.
