A two-year-old girl was critically injured on Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle in Bu'eine Nujeidat, a community in Israel's Lower Galilee. Magen David Adom, Israel's national emergency medical service, said its 101 dispatch centre in the Jordan region received the call at 18:21, reporting that a small child had been hit.

According to the service, its emergency medical technicians and paramedics treated the girl at the scene and then took her to the Tzafon (Northern) Medical Center at Poriya. Magen David Adom described her condition as critical and said she had suffered multi-system trauma, meaning injuries affecting more than one part of the body. Ynet, the news site of the Yedioth Ahronoth group, also reported in a brief alert that a toddler had been struck by a vehicle in the Lower Galilee and was in critical condition.

Who reported the incident

Magen David Adom, often shortened to MDA, is Israel's national ambulance and emergency medical organisation, roughly equivalent to an ambulance service elsewhere, and it is also the country's member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Its crews are usually the first medical responders at road incidents, and its spokesperson's office routinely publishes short statements on serious injuries through its official channels. These statements typically give the time a call came in, the location, the condition of the injured and the hospital they were taken to, and little beyond that.

The number 101 is the national emergency line for MDA, the medical counterpart to the police line. MDA divides the country into regional districts; the Jordan region referred to in its statement is the district covering the area around the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan Valley in the north of the country.

Ynet's report was a short push alert rather than a full article, and it did not name the community, referring only to the Lower Galilee. The details of the location, the girl's age and the hospital come from the MDA statement.

Where it happened

Bu'eine Nujeidat is an Arab community in the Lower Galilee, the hilly region of northern Israel lying between the Jezreel Valley and the Sea of Galilee. The hospital she was taken to, the Tzafon Medical Center at Poriya, sits on a ridge above the city of Tiberias and serves as the main hospital for much of the eastern Galilee. Patients with serious injuries from communities in the surrounding area are commonly brought there by MDA crews.

What the medical terms mean

MDA uses a fixed scale when it describes the condition of the injured. The Hebrew word in its statement, anush, is the most serious category on that scale and is usually rendered in English as critical. It indicates an immediate threat to life. Multi-system trauma, the term MDA used for the girl's injuries, refers to damage across several body systems at once, which is the kind of injury often seen when a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle.

Child pedestrian injuries in Israel

Incidents in which young children are struck by vehicles are reported regularly by Israeli emergency services, and MDA and child safety organisations in Israel have repeatedly issued public warnings on the subject. Such cases frequently occur close to homes, in yards, driveways and residential streets, and in some cases involve a vehicle belonging to the family or to neighbours. The reports on this incident do not say whether any of those circumstances applied here, and it should not be assumed that they did.

What the reports do not say

Neither report explains how the girl came to be hit. They do not say what kind of vehicle was involved, who was driving, whether the driver stayed at the scene, or whether the incident happened on a public road or on private ground. Neither organisation mentions a police investigation, any arrest or questioning, or a statement from the police. The girl has not been named, and no family members have been quoted.

The reports also give no information on the girl's condition after she arrived at hospital. MDA's account ends with her being taken to Poriya, and no statement from the hospital is included in the material. Any update on her condition or on the circumstances of the incident would need to come from the hospital, the police or later reporting.

How we checked this

The incident was reported by Magen David Adom and in a brief Ynet alert, which agree that a toddler was critically injured by a vehicle in the Lower Galilee. The girl's age, the exact location, the call time, the hospital and the nature of her injuries come from MDA's statement alone.
