The number

Where this rate comes from

The figure at the top of this page uses the European Central Bank's daily reference rate, read through frankfurter.dev. The ECB publishes it on business days, so it does not move over a weekend, and this page rechecks it every six hours.

It is a mid-market benchmark rather than a price you can trade at. Banks, cards and exchange counters each add a spread on top, so the amount that actually lands is smaller than the one above. Airport kiosks and hotel desks carry the widest spreads; cards and dedicated transfer services usually come closest.

When the feed is unavailable the page falls back to the last rate it holds and says so in the line under the headline figure, rather than presenting an old number as today's.
