Tishbi is a family winery whose story, as its site tells it, starts in 1882, when Michael and Malka Chamiletzki came from Lithuania to Zichron Ya'akov and Michael was chosen by Baron Rothschild to plant vineyards; in 1925 the family hosted the poet Bialik, who gave them the name Tishbi. Yonatan Tishbi left the Carmel Mizrahi cooperative during the wine crisis of 1984 and opened a small winery of his own, which now makes about a million bottles a year, with a still that makes brandy by the alembic method. The visitor centre looks over the winery's vineyards and sells its wines, wine jams, olive oil, Valrhona chocolate and BBQ Garage spices, with refill stations where wine and olive oil are sold by the litre into bottles guests bring. It runs guided tastings of wine, of wine and chocolate, or of wine, chocolate and cheese, and the winery's dairy restaurant cooks with local seasonal produce, cheeses from the area, fish and the family's own olive oil.
