Three retired buses turned by hand into guest units on a hilltop in Ezuz, facing the Israeli side of the Sinai desert.
Zimmerbus is run by Eyal and Avigail Hirshfeld, who met in 1996 as diving instructors in Dahab, travelled the world and then settled in Ezuz, a village of about 17 families on the Egyptian border; Eyal was born in Israel and Avigail grew up in Pretoria. They found three buses that had gone out of service and turned them with their own hands into three guest units on a hilltop facing the desert: the Terminal, an airport shuttle bus; the Accordion, once the number 26 in Tel Aviv; and a couple's bus that once ran as the number 2 between Tel Aviv and Rishon LeZion. The family units have a children's playroom in the original driver's cab, and Avigail's handmade mosaics decorate the bathrooms. The site says Zimmerbus is the only lodging in Israel on a French list of 1,001 unusual places to stay in the world, and its area page points guests to the village's ceramic studio and workshops, bird-watching, two cycling trails around the village and the Be'erotayim grove nearby.

The Terminal bus

A shuttle bus that once carried passengers to the planes at Ben-Gurion Airport: two double beds, one in a separate bedroom and one in a loft over the living room, a children's bedroom reached through a secret door from a playroom in the original driver's cab, a fully equipped kitchen and a bath decorated with Avigail's handmade mosaics. Outside are a sunset-facing balcony with a dining table, a hammock, a barbecue, a private dipping pool and shaded parking beside the bus.
The Accordion bus

The largest unit, once the number 26 bus in Tel Aviv: two separate bedrooms, a living room, an equipped kitchen, a bath and a children's playroom in the driver's cab, with a pergola shaded by palm fronds and an inner yard with a pool and a table-tennis table.
The Couple bus

Once the number 2 bus between Tel Aviv and Rishon LeZion: the back seat has become a double bed, with a sofa, a tea and coffee corner and a mosaic-decorated toilet inside, and outside a shaded inner yard with an equipped kitchenette, a pergola of arches facing the desert, a fire corner and barbecue and a bath under the stars.
Each bus is air-conditioned.
