Andrea Murez was born on 29 January 1992 in Los Angeles to a Jewish family, the daughter of Melanie and Jim Murez. Her paternal grandfather, Joe Murez, swam for Hakoah Vienna in the 1930s and moved to the United States in 1938. Her father's stepfather, Raymond Federman, survived the Holocaust in France and later swam for the French national team.

She graduated from Venice High School in 2009, where she won 8 City Section individual titles. She then studied human biology at Stanford University on a swimming scholarship. She later studied medicine at Tel Aviv University.

At Stanford she was a 3-time NCAA All-American and helped set a U.S. record in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 2012. For the United States she won relay gold, silver and bronze medals at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan.

She immigrated to Israel in 2014 and lived in Netanya at the Wingate Institute. She set Israeli records in freestyle events and became the first Israeli swimmer to swim 200 m freestyle in under 2 minutes. She swam for Israel at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, and at the 2024 Paris Olympics she was a flag bearer with judoka Peter Paltchik.
