Aner Shapira was born in 2001 in Jerusalem
Aner Elyakim Shapira was born on March 12, 2001, in Jerusalem to Shira and Moshe, the eldest of 7 children. His grandparents Hanina and Yemima Ben-Menahem are professors emeriti at the Hebrew University. His great-grandfather Haim-Moshe Shapira signed Israel's Declaration of Independence.
He studied at Himmelfarb High School and then joined a pre-military academy in Kfar Ruppin. He was injured twice during tryouts for Sayeret Matkal, which delayed his enlistment. While waiting, he wrote music and recorded songs in a home studio he built.
He enlisted in the Nahal Brigade in August 2021 and later became a team sergeant in its reconnaissance battalion. On October 7, 2023, he was at the Nova festival with his friend Hersh Goldberg-Polin. Hiding in a shelter near Re'im, he threw grenades back out until one killed him, and at least 7 people in the shelter survived.
He was buried on Mount Herzl on October 13, 2023. His family released his song "Jerooz", the EP "Introduction to Anarchism" in March 2024, and the album "Looking for Love" in March 2025. A statue of him was unveiled in Béziers, France, in May 2024.
