Anna Ticho was born in 1894 in Brno
Anna Ticho was born in Brno, Moravia, then part of Austria-Hungary, on 27 October 1894. Her parents were Pinchas and Bertha Braun, and she grew up in Vienna. At 15 she began studying drawing at an art school in Vienna.
In 1912 she moved with her mother to Jerusalem, and on 7 November 1912 she married her cousin, eye doctor Avraham Albert Ticho. In December 1917 the couple was exiled to Damascus, where she worked as a nurse and began sketching landscapes while recovering from typhus. After returning to Jerusalem, she assisted her husband in his eye clinic.
In 1924 the couple bought a large house in Jerusalem, with the clinic below and their home above. They hosted officials, artists, writers and intellectuals there. From the 1930s she drew the Jerusalem hills and local people in pencil, ink and charcoal.
In 1950 the couple bought a home in Motza Ilit. After her husband's death, her drawings became freer, and her later works used watercolor and pastel. She held solo exhibitions in Israel, Europe and the United States.
She left the house and its art collection to the Israel Museum, and it now operates as Ticho House. She died on 1 March 1980 and was buried in Har HaMenuchot in Jerusalem.
