Aviv Regev was born in 1971
Aviv Regev was born on 11 July 1971. She studied in the Adi Lautman Interdisciplinary Program at Tel Aviv University. She earned her PhD there in 2002 under Eva Jablonka and Ehud Shapiro, applying pi-calculus from computer science to biochemical networks.
She then became a Bauer Fellow at Harvard University, where she led her own group and studied gene-regulatory networks. In 2006 she joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and became a core member of the Broad Institute. In 2012 she became founding director of the Klarman Cell Observatory, and from 2014 to 2020 she chaired the Broad faculty.
Her work turned to single-cell genomics, identifying cell types and states and the programs that control them. In 2016 she and Sarah Teichmann co-founded the Human Cell Atlas, an international effort to map the cells of the human body.
In August 2020 she joined Genentech as head and executive vice president of Genentech Research and Early Development. She also joined the enlarged Corporate Executive Committee of Roche. There she developed the Lab in the Loop approach, which links large experiments with machine-learning models for drug discovery.
