Avram Grant was born in 1955 in Petah Tikva

Grant was born in Petah Tikva in 1955 as Avraham Granat. His father, Meir Granat, was a Holocaust survivor from Poland, and his mother, Aliza Nisan, immigrated from Iraq. He shortened his surname to Grant in the late 1980s.

Grant never played professional football. He began coaching the youth team of Hapoel Petah Tikva as a teenager and took over the first team in 1986. He then coached Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Haifa and Maccabi Haifa, winning league titles in 1992, 1995, 2001 and 2002.

In 2002 he became coach of the Israel national team, leading it in qualifying for Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup. Israel did not qualify for either tournament.

Grant moved to Portsmouth in 2006 and became Chelsea manager in 2007, reaching the Champions League final. He later managed Portsmouth, West Ham United, Partizan Belgrade and the Ghana national team, which he led to the final stages of the Africa Cup of Nations.
